Introduction To Prairie Malt Limited

Cargill Inc.Saskatchewan Wheat PoolThe plant was built in 1977, and was purchased from the Saskatchewan provincial government in 1989 as a joint venture between Schreier Malting Company and the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, Canada's largest agricultural marketing cooperative. The Wheat Pool, with over 65,000 producer members, is a preferred supplier of barley to Prairie Malt's operations. In 1998, Cargill Inc. purchased the Schreier Malting portion of Prairie Malt. Cargill Malt has eleven malt plants in nine countries in North America, South America, Europe and Asia.

Prairie Malt utilizes the Wanderhaufen system for the germination process. Four "streets", each with a width of about 9 metres (19 feet) and a length of about 80 metres (262 feet), allow the barley to germinate for up to five days.

Prairie Malt also utilizes the Fleximalt system which combines germination and kilning in one malt compartment.
